Year of the Monkey

Getting to be in China during the Lunar New Year was an experience I will never forget.  I booked this trip after living in Korea for only 2 weeks. The experience of booking didn't feel totally real. It was almost 6 months away. It was almost not comprehendible to imagine being in Beijing during the Chinese New Year. That's not my life. I don't do amazing things like that. I admire other people's amazing journeys and adventures. However, In the last 6 months, that idea that I had about myself has been changing. I can be the adventurous person. Coming to Korea has enabled me to stop watching life on the sidelines and feel like a front runner. Everyone has just one life to live (depending on what you believe), and in these last 6 months I feel like I'm making mine truly count.

Okay, now that I have ranted, let's talk about Beijing...
We don't get much time off from our job, so when we are set free from the tiny office at Lex Kim, we all scatter across Asia. Some went to Vietnam, another went to the Philippines, others decided on a staycation. We took our Lunar New Year straight to the source, Beijing baby!

A few of us needed to work that Saturday. It was like running a race. Saturday classes are 10 minutes shorter and breaks are 5 minutes shorter. It's a much faster pace than the week days. Blazing through the classes so we could all disperse throughout the continent. 12:30 pm struck and I made sure not to take any students down racing to the elevator. (I really do love the students, but...when it's vacation time, cute kiddies better scram!)

We arrived in Beijing after midnight and were picked up at the airport by the hostel we were staying at. Had my name on a piece of paper and everything #fancy :)
Luckily, we had an extremely early wake up call for our Beijing tour, so we were able to get about 4 hours of sleep (score!).
First stop? Tiananmen Square! I had a limited amount of historical background knowledge before coming. Protests and tanks were my understanding. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and had a plethora of interesting facts, however, he seemed to skim over, if not totally dismiss any negative historical information. Thankfully, one of my girlfriends Kelsey, with her giant brain, was with me to clear up missing details. It was amazing to be able to see this place in person and learn the history behind it.

Now, on to the Forbidden City!
Considering what I have heard about the Forbidden City, I found myself able to appreciate the history and meaningfulness of this landmark, but I also felt a little underwhelmed. Once again though, our tour guide had an endless amount of knowledge. From the history of feet binding, the emperors concubines, the structure of the palace, the lions meanings, etc. If I learned one thing that I will take with me after visiting the Forbidden City it was that being one the emperor's concubines was a pretty crappy job.

At this point, we had been walking around central Beijing for a few hours listening to extensive historical details about two of Beijing's most famous landmarks. I was appreciating the time I was spending in those two spots, but I couldn't shake the excitement of seeing the Great Wall. Is it really that great?

Why, yes! Yes, it is! It was substaintially colder at the wall than anywhere else in Beijing that day, but I did not mind one bit. I did mind that my phone got too cold and died too soon (NO! It wasn't his time! So much to live for!). *This picture was obviously taken pre-phonedeath*
You see pictures of it, you learn about it, you hear people talk about it, but then you finally see it with your own two eyes and you're left speechless.

Our tour guide set us loose when we arrived at the wall, which was excellent because though he had an exuberant amount of Beijing knowledge, I knew I wanted this to be a peaceful time and just walk the Wall on my own (and with friends).
Despite what this picture looks like, the Wall is much steeper than I thought it would be (excellent, love a challenge!). I started walking with the girls I was traveling with, but I started to trek on ahead. I had a smile on my face that was growing with each step I took.  This is really happening. I'm on the Great Wall of China right now. Maybe people are watching me from space, that'd be sweet. What up astronauts! Don't be jealous! Chinese New Year in Beijing, chilling (literally) on the Great Wall of China. Life does not get more surreal than that.

The picture does not do the view justice. I could have spent the rest of the day looking at this.  However, on my way down I decided to be the first person to "log roll" down the Great Wall, and the guards started paying closer attention me...so I don't think I would have been welcome much longer. I tend to make choices that I find funny, but not everyone might find humor. So I tuck-and-rolled out of there! Not before skipping past the guards and obnoxiously chatting, "U.S.A!" Good idea Courtney. Lucky the girls I was traveling with have good senses of humor! :D
After a life-changing experience at the Great Wall, we headed to a traditional tea house not far from our hostel.  Obviously, I left with authentic Chinese tea because how could I come to China and not?
We were all pretty exhausted since our 7 hour tour turned into 12+ hrs.
We all agreed to relax the rest of the night...that is until we actually got back to our hostel. Our "quiet night" was clearly not going to be quiet at all.
This is the scene that we walked into after 12+ hours touring Beijing.
"We had a dinner earlier, there might be leftovers," the girl at the front desk told us...so we were able to have the "scraps."
Meat, fish, soup, fruit, beer, veggies, and it just kept coming. I was handed one beer, and then handed another one, and then an apple, and chopsticks for the meat. I didn't even know where to start or what was happening honestly.
So, after stuffing our faces we decided that even though it was the middle of winter we were going to hang out on the roof of the hostel...
And then fireworks started going off in every direction...this continued from 11pm to past my bedtime (I heard them going off at 7 am). Drinking terrible Chinese wine on the roof of a hostel with people that we had only known for about an hour and watching a "ring of fire" surround us was probably the most surreal way to end my first day in China.

The next day, we continued our escapades around Beijing. Chilling at the Temple of Heaven. I didn't initially have a great desire to visit this temple, but I am so glad that we made the trip! We spent a few hours just walking around the water, enjoying the extraordinary views in every direction.
Water frozen over, but the weather was fantastic.

Snack shop at the temple...chicken feet. Right next to the oreos and chips. Classic snacks, not out of the ordinary.

Later we were able to see a Kung Fu show and have some classic peking duck (because how can you not?).

On the agenda or the last day?...
Class Chinese food street. We've got some full on chickens.
Some fried star fish and basically anything else that can be fried was fried.

Prettiest ice cream I have every seen. I didn't get to try, but I did hear they are much nicer to look at than eat.
Final view before we grabbed the subway to the airport...the outside of our hostel.

So, this post took a long time to post. But, it is progress! It was also difficult to try and explain this trip in such few words. I started this post right when I got home in February...as I write this exact sentence, it is almost April. Good job, Courtney. Way to procrastinate.

Oooooh, we're half way there!

Many of you probably forgot that I have a blog! *It's okay, I did too*

SO my last post was from September and I had only been living in Korea for one month...well, now it's half way through February, as well as my teaching contract in Korea.

Let's think, what have I missed talking about in the last 5 months??

Little Halloween action, witch and a pig in a blanket
Just some of the cuties that I get to work with
Christmas shopping and eating tall ice cream

Christmas trees to set the holiday mood

Christmas tree moms to remind you what you're missing

Two of my reading classes. We now have pen pals with a deaf class from Austin, TX thanks to my friend Brittany :)

Skiing in Korea

Lookin' good, feeling happy

Handstand seminars

More christmas shopping

Some simile teaching action around Christmas

Santa with a rice cooker for a head

Christmas Eve brunch at a fancy fancy place

Oh yeah! For our very short winter break, I spent a little time in Thailand.

Feeding elephants, riding elephants, petting elephants...just a lot of things to do with elephants

Some good looking lady boys after the Tiffany Cabaret show on New Years Eve

Lady boys everywhere

So long 2015, a grand farewell!12:00 am 2016

So yeah, it was a good time!
(Basic white girl picture jumping on a beach, not so basic in Thailand though)

Returning from Thailand was interesting. I found myself missing "home," and ready to return to my state of normalcy. Thinking about those two words, "home" and "normal," I realize how those words have gradually changed their meaning.

Home prior to August 2015 = Long Island, Crossfit Smithtown, suburbia, a place where avocados don't cost $3, my cat Nigel attacking my shins but then nuzzling me, a place where I don't need someone to read menus for me because everything is written in English, a place where medical masks are only worn in a medical setting

Normal prior to August 2015 = Purchasing cheese, using an oven, baking, driving everywhere, lounging on the couch and watching whatever is on TV, seeing my family on a daily basis, seeing my friends on a daily basis, working about 3 or 5 jobs (CF coaching, subbing in school, TA, tutor, baby sit, gym receptionist, etc.), living with my parents and brothers,

Home after August 2015 = Still not entirely sure how to answer this. My heart will always be in New York with my family, but I'm in a state of not knowing where home is at the moment. I live in Korea, but I know it's not "home." I'm from New York, but I feel like when I return to the states that I may not feel like I belong in New York either. My brain is having problems working right now regarding this topic. Let's move on...

Normal after August 2015 = Seeing movies with Korea subtitles, subways regularly,  being a lead teacher for the most intelligent children I've ever met, kimchi everyday, cheese is so expensive it makes more sense to make it yourself, dog cafes, turkey does not exist, avocados are a grand luxury, tea all day er'y day, being "Queen of Crossfit" at my gym, video chatting during opposite times of the day with the people I love, taxis (and very cheap), traveling to different countries in Asia for a long weekend, care packages, living in one of the largest cities in the world, never driving a car, almost getting hit by cars, reaching expert level on chopstick use, living alone, a trip to Costco is an event that must be planned days in advance and it does not happen regularly (if ever), drunk Korean business men at all hours of the day, not understanding 98% of what people are saying, feeling like a toddler because you don't know how to read the language, deciding where you're going to dance and drink on the weekend, hiking amazing mountains, not being up-to-date on western pop culture, checking the exchange rate of won to USD, learning Korean, hearing Korean, meeting people from around the world, becoming friends with people but realizing that after one of your contracts are up you probably will never see them again

So, my state of normal has drastically changed to say the least. It's interesting to think how much I have changed in these last six months, and yet I am only half way done with my time here.

When I think about what I have been able to accomplish in the past six months  it leaves me speechless. I feel so blessed that I have been given this opportunity to live my life this way and see the world in a way I only every dreamed about.  I have also found a great church to attend. So many things to be thankful for and I know whom I have to thank, my god has been treating very well. I finally started listening to him a few months ago and he has not been steering me wrong.

Last night a returned from my trip to Beijing, China. I saw the "Aright" Wall of China, it was alright. I think I will write a separate post for my trip, because that is what it deserves...also I need to load all my pictures and what not.

New year, new resolutions.  (Year of the monkey!)

Resolution 1: Keep up with my blog more.
Resolution 2: Less Netflix and more reading.
Resolution 3: Don't judge people too quickly (There's too many people that I judged too quickly that I have become great friends with later)
Resolution 4: Finding ways to live my life the way I want and do what makes me happy.

Wake me up when September ends

I know the title of this post is cliche, but I can't help that it fits with the time frame.

It is wild to think that I have been living in South Korea for a month now. It feels like only just arrived! I have learned and experienced so much in my short time here. Tried some pretty interesting foods, met some awesome (and some very weird) people, and learned a little Korean (hope I learn a little more because "Hello" "Thank you" "Yes" and "no" will only get you so far)!

Work is going really well! I have been on my own planning lessons for the past 2 1/2 weeks. Initially the senior teachers were planning all of the new girls lessons, but I'm pleased to report when the responsibility was bestoed upon me (did I freak out and think I couldn't do it? YES!!) I was able to come through with some lessons and outcomes that I am proud of :D
Having 4 different classes 5 days a week seemed like it would be extremely confusing and overwhelming at first (and believe me it was) but I feel like I'm really getting the hang of things at work and building great relationships with the students. Learning names has been a challenge since the students change every day, but I've actually impressed myself by being able to keep track of the majority of my kids so far!! Woo, great success!

Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) is coming up soon which will be great! We finally get some time off from work. Not going anywhere crazy like Japan or China like my co-workers, but I do plan on exploring a little more of Korea with some people.

I have booked 2 amazing trips for the future though! For our short break in December, I will be in Thailand and for February I will able to cross seeing the Great Wall of China off my bucket list! I can't wait to explore Beijing and see the forbidden city!! I realized after 2 weeks of being here that this year may very well move too fast, so I decided to make sure I made the most of my time in Asia by booking trips to places and making sure I don't miss out before I leave.

Went hiking with girls from work yesterday! It is amazing that we are in the middle of a huge metropolitan city, but you take the subway 15-30 mins and you are looking at an amazing mountain to hike up. Being able to wake up and go for a hike in the morning and then go to work later is amazing. We don't start work until 1pm, so we'll leave at about 8am, hike for about an hour or so, and then have time to shower and eat before work. It's kind of surreal.

Plans for today?? Lauren and I want to go to a puppy cafe before work to get our cute puppy fix in. I haven't been to a puppy cafe yet, but I feel like it will help keep me sane at work.

I'm going to stop before this really just becomes a rambling of nonsense. I will try to update a little more frequently!

The usual 7am crew!! Such a friendly welcoming group of people :)

Chilling on the top of a mountain before work

Wouldn't have made it to the top without her!

Waiting to meet up with someone on the subway and this dirty kitty costume person made me take a picture with it

My team for the crossfit team series!! Pretty tired after week one's workouts.

So many mountains to see

Trying to keep up with the happenings of my little nephew (Distance can't stop us!)

Post Birthday festivities

Quick little update! :)

Starting my third week of work and I'm feeling pretty good about it! I started planning some of my own lesson last week. I am starting get the flow of the work space and not feel like the newbie, but really apart of the Lex Kim crew!! Woo! Planning my own lessons made me feel a different level of accomplishment and gratification. Seeing the kids really enjoy the activity was not to shabby either.

Friday our boss took all of us out for lunch before work to a buffet where there were more options to eat than just kimchi and rice...so needless to say I went H.A.M. on some chicken and veggies. Finally having a little more diversity in my diet was a fan-freaking-tastic way to end the week.

On Wednesday I was able to meet Julie Foucher!! (If you are not familiar with the crossfit world then you will know who she is or care...but for those of you that do, it was AWESOME!!) The week really flew by. Being busier at work helps make the week really move. It's making me realize just how fast this experience may go! It's making me think about all the things I need to do and see before I leave! Coming to this realization inspired me to start looking up flights for our long weekends and short little vacas. Bangkok for new years seems like that's happening, and possibly Bejing and the great wall in February. So much do and so little time!!

Saturday was my birthday and it was one of my favorite Birthday's to date! Lovely morning at the gym sweating as much as possible to prepare for all the food and alcohol later on. Brunch with 2 lovely ladies from work. Then Korean baseball game (Koreans really love their baseball). We weren't even watching the game and it was a blast. Then we had to get dinner at Korean BBQ obviously, then a bar where lots of expats hang out and then finishing the night getting invited to a party at the Ritz-Carlton. I have a feeling 24 is going to be a good year.

Monday morning and the last day of August. I'm ready to really get this year going and keep having a blast!

Me and Julie Foucher

Yummy birthday food!

Lovely picnic in the stadium

Friends!
